I kind of agree with Zahid bhai and Asif. The best practice totally depends on your career goal and working experience. Highly experienced designers usually don't care about branding, logo, colors, typography or any beautification for their own site. Because most of the cases they don't do visual things anymore. They follow design process or create new processes for others. So, If I hire someone experienced designer (above 10+ experienced) as an employer then I would like to see how he/she works, what design process they follow, how he/she leads others, their case studies etc. instead of asking them to show their portfolio.
So, to me, design best practice is totally up to you. It's not mandatory at all.
